Great Journey of 2019 - Episode 2 of Season 3

Day 3 - Mar 4

This morning was a bit cooler than we have experienced in the past couple of dasy.   But it is still a nice day.  So this morning, we decided to take a walk down the beach and see what we could find.  We made it to the pier, where there is a Joe's Crab Shack.   Joe's may be an experience for back home, but here in Florida we prefer to eat at more local places.   Anyway the pier was the objective of the walk, its extra steps to see what we could find beyond it.

The pier is where the International Speedway highway meets the ocean.  The initial location where people in the past would drive upon the beach.  It is at this site, that some of the original land speed records were made upon the Daytona Beach sand.  The city erected a cools statue near this location.

Like all good walks on the beach, you always need to walk back.  With the sun higher in the sky, it started to get warm.  I suggested we stop in at the Landshark for beach drinks and light lunch of fish tacos.  The beach drinks sapped all motivation out of us.  When we got back to the room, we just lazily hung out for a few hours.

Around 300 PM we put on our swim suits and attempted to swim in Ocean.  Well, the weather took a turn around 330 PM and the temperature dropped almost twenty degrees before we got to the water.  We ended up swimming in the pool for a few minutes and then we jumped into the hot tub.

After the hot tub we cleaned up for dinner.  As we left the motel we found the car just as we left it last night.

LoriAnn had chosen the place for dinner the last two nights.  Her record with crab places wasn't going good.   So I choose the dinner venue and food.  We went to Genovese's Italian Cafe.   The ambiance was good and the food was great.

Day 4 - Mar 5

It is a cold day.  The sky is cloudy and there is a chance of rain in the forecast.

Sadly if we had known that the weather was going to turn cold on us today the last day in Daytona, we would have swam yesterday morning instead of going for a walk.   There will be no more ocean wave bashing for us this trip.  Today we ventured off the beach.

Today we went to the Daytona Speedway and took a tour.  The rain stopped just as we boarded the tram for a ride around the track.   We stopped in the media building, and at the winners circle.  We got to go into the upper level stands for a view of the entire track.

We also got to see the winning car of this years Daytona 500 which was run just a couple of weeks ago.  This is the car just as it was when it was rolled onto victory circle.   The owners do not get it back until the day before next years race.

After the track we went onto main street where bike week activities were just beginning.  I bought myself a Bike Week ball cap for a souvenir.  A few years ago, LoriAnn and I had been to Daytona in the midst of bike week and knew that it will be a wild time.   Now, the street was really quiet.   The quiet before the storm.

This is our twelfth day on the road.  Although we washed a few loads of laundry at Mark and Delores's house, we are running short on some clothing necessities and we do not know what the future will have in store for us.   So today we completed a load of laundry.   And then we packed for another departure.

To extend my winning streak in picking a great restaurant, we drove over to Hulls Seafood Market for dinner.  As we waited for a table to get ready we wondered thru the restaurant and got close to the kitchen.   One of the food prep folks greeted us and recommended that we try the Golden Tile fish.  Then she handed each of us a sample of their two soups of the day.   One was a tomato based soup, and it was good.  The other was a blue crab gumbo.  Oh my gosh, the gumbo was excellent.  For dinner, we each had the Tile fish broiled along with a bowl of the blue crab gumbo.   I highly recommend Hulls!

Day 5 - Mar 6

Today we leave Daytona.   I decided we would drive north along the coast towards Jacksonville.  At Jacksonville we headed inland to the interstate and the drove up north to Charleston SC.

Along the way, we jumped off the interstate and drove the cute town of St Augustine.   St Augustine is the oldest settlement in the United States.  There is a neat fort located outside of old town.  It is also where Ponce De Leon found the fountain of youth.

We arrived into Charleston, checked into the motel and then notified my cousin Jeff that we were back into town.   Jeff and his wife Sharon are in Charleston for a few months enjoying retirement and time with their son Zach who lives here.  LoriAnn and I have had fun Jeff and Sharon on several different vacations, and now we get to spend a couple days touring Charleston together.  But that is a story for another day!

Our first night in Charleston LoriAnn and I went out for dinner at the Crab Shack.  There we had our first taste of She Crab soup.   Again, we found another sea food soup that was delicious!

Come back for Season 4.  You will find that this journey is going as slow as a horse as we find out about life on a plantation and the Gullah Culture.
